Physics Faculty

Position Announcement:

The Department of Physics and the Center for Space Plasma and Aeronomic Research (CSPAR) of the University of Alabama in Huntsville invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professor to conduct research in the field of interplanetary plasma turbulence or a closely related area in heliophysics. The position will begin in fall 2011. The appointment will initially be funded at 0.5 FTE level but may become a full FTE position within the next 6 years as grant and contract funding of CSPAR grows to appropriate levels in the future. The successful applicant must therefore be able to provide at least half of the funding for the position from external grants and contracts. The successful candidate will hold a partial research appointment in the Center for Space Plasma and Aeronomic Research (CSPAR).

We are particularly seeking candidates who have either developed numerical simulations of low frequency magnetized turbulence or have experience in the observations of interplanetary turbulence. However, excellent candidates in related heliopbysics fields will also be considered. Experience and demonstrated research capabilities in the aforementioned areas and expertise in developing various 2D and 3D fluid codes with MPI parallelization on clusters is additionally desirable.

Applicants should possess a strong aptitude and commitment towards teaching, and have a demonstrated interest and ability to attract external funding and involve graduate students and post docs in a productive research program. Collaboration is encouraged within the Department of Physics, CSPAR and with the NASA Marshall Space Flight Center. A Ph.D. is needed and several years of post doc experience are desirable.

To apply for this position, please send a cover letter, resume, statement of research and teaching experience, and the names of at least three references with contact information, including names, addresses, phone numbers and e-mail addresses to the search committee: Dr. Gary P. Zank c/o Veronica Belser, Cramer Hall/NSSTC 2003, 320 Sparkman Drive, Huntsville, AL 35805, VAB0002@uah.edu. Consideration will be given to those who meet the above description and submit their applications before/on the due date of September 1, 2011
